To apply the Scrum values in sprint planning, you should commit to a realistic and achievable sprint goal that aligns with the product vision and customer needs.

It’s important to have the courage to say no to unrealistic expectations, scope creep, or distractions that might compromise the quality or value of the sprint outcome. Focus on the most important and valuable product backlog items that contribute to the sprint goal and product increment. Additionally, be open to feedback, suggestions, and questions from the Product Owner, Scrum Master, and other team members. Lastly, respect each team member’s roles, responsibilities, and expertise as well as trust them to do their best.

  • Focus — It helps in the creation of necessary or relevant tasks and assists the team to ensure the work breakdown of Product Backlog Items.
  • Respect — Every team member perspective are treated with respect, creating a welcoming culture that encourages collaboration.
  • Openness — Transparency is promoted by openness, which encourages everyone to discuss their views and concerns related to sprint goals that have potential to impact the schedule / delivery.
  • Commitment — Team members’ acceptance to accomplishing the Sprint Goal based on available capacity is the proof of their commitment.
  • Courage — Before committing to sprint goals, it requires courage to bring up any dependencies, risks, or differences on deliverables by team members.
